Final 2007 Century Club National Top 100 High School Rankings

At long last, we give you the "Behemoth," the top 782 teams in all the land, headlined by Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, our 2007 national champions. Congratulations to every team in the rankings for an outstanding season!

As you survey the list, please keep several things in mind:

1. There are 150 or more schools whose seasons are deserving of top 100 consideration; unfortunately, there is room for only 100. When I rank the top 100 during the season, I inevitably reserve a spot or two (or more) for outstanding squads from emerging volleyball states. I know that the teams from powerful states ranked in the top 200 or so would most likely win a showdown against the top 100 team from the emerging state. Please know that I’m not slighting the team from the strong states; rather, I’m recognizing teams from the emerging ones.

2. The rankings from 101-782 are largely ceremonial, designed to recognize teams for their outstanding seasons rather than meticulously determine their place in the national pecking order. Because it is not done with the rigor of the top 100, it’s probable, likely in fact, that you’ll find teams that are “out of place," meaning that they are listed ahead of teams that defeated them during the season. You may even find that you are a hundred or more places lower than you “should” be. Please don’t sweat it. What I tried to do was create a rough state by state ranking and then intersperse teams. As a general rule, teams ranked in the 100s are considered by me to be stronger than teams in the 300s and so on, but I make no claim to who’s better between team No. 233 and 234.

3. For the biggest and best volleyball states, please know that I stopped ranking teams once I got to between 30-50. That leaves a lot of very fine teams out. I also only ranked the state champion in the lowest divisions of many states, which leaves out a lot of other teams. If you had a great season and are not ranked here, I bid you congratulations on your year and sorry for not including you. State by state, I had to cut somewhere and it’s possible you just missed it. The cut was somewhat arbitrary; I took more teams from strong states and fewer from weaker ones.

4. For schools ranked near the bottom of this list, you can decide whether you want your glass half full or half empty. In my view, it is no insult to be in the 600-800 range when there are 9,500 schools not on the list who’d love to be where you are.

5. As you peruse the list, you may come across a hundred or more schools with incomplete records. If you want to e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with an accurate final record that includes all regular season and post-season matches, including tournaments, played to at least two games, great! I’ll make the correction.

6. How about a contest? Of the 782 teams on this list, how many have I seen play in person this year? E-mail your answer. The person closest gets a volleyball and PrepVolleyball T-shirt! Hint: It is less than 100!

That’s it! Please enjoy the list for what it is, then go to the message board, register and tell me (respectfully, of course) why your team should have been ranked waaaay higher. I will be updating the list with blurbs and records throughout the weekend. And may add deserving teams I overlooked during my initial sweep. Those will be designated with a shared number and the accompanying letter “a.” So, in actuality, there will be more than 782 teams.

Final 2007 Century Club National Top 100 Rankings

1. Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, California)
Final record: 37-0; Last ranking: 1
Pre-season ranking: 4

After winning back to back national championships on top of four state titles in a row, the 2008 Mustangs will have a lot to live up to, especially with five senior stars graduating. There may not be a threepeat national title next year, but with Falyn Fonoimoana back along with Sheridan Taylor, Alyssa Anderson and Jackie Gardner, Mira Costa should once again field an excellent team.

2. Amarillo (Texas)
Final record: 46-1; Last ranking: 2

Pre-season ranking: 3

Eight Sandie seniors will graduate from a team that compiled a 133-5 record the past three years with two 5A state titles. Aryn Bohannon, Torri Campbell and Danielle Barker will combine with a fine JV team to try to lead Amarillo to glory again next year.

3. Assumption (Louisville, Kentucky)
Final record: 40-3; Last ranking: 3

Pre-season ranking: 1

Though winning state titles has been commonplace for the Rockets, the graduation of seven starters from this year’s title team will make their 2008 quest quite challenging. The back row will be sound, as usual. Emily Hayden, who will be a senior, and rising sophs Jeni Houser and Claire Gerwig will have to come up big in the front row.

4. Kamehameha (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Final record: 44-2; Last ranking: 4
Pre-season ranking: 5

Losing eight seniors, do not look for Kamehameha to tack on a fourth consecutive Division I state title in 2008. The Warriors will still be very good, of course, led by Alex Akana, Whitney Vivieros and Caitlin Andrade.

5. Mother of Mercy (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Final record: 28-1; Last ranking: 5
Pre-season ranking: 42

The Bobcats graduate 12 seniors on a team of 15, including Division I signees Michelle James (Niagara) and Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati). They may not duplicate 2007, where the team matched its best record ever and won state for the first time in 25 years, but they should still be tough in the brutal GGCL. Steph Vorherr will lead them.

6. Crystal Lake Central (Crystal Lake, Illinois)
Final record: 42-0; Last ranking: 6
Pre-season ranking: 61

It’s hard to run the table in Illinois. CLC did it while losing only one game. One! The Tigers were 626-173 in Doug Blundy’s previous 23 years at the helm, pretty good, but the 2007 version was magical. With nine seniors graduating, CLC will be hard-pressed to come close to matching 2007 next season. Cori Cooper and Lindsay Anderson will lead the Tigers.

7. St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kansas)
Final record: 39-3; Last ranking: 7
Pre-season ranking: 59

The Saints lost thrice to Bishop Miege, but won the one that counted in the state 5A final to repeat as champs. Aquinas graduates a lot, but also returns a lot: Liz Gohde, Megan Baska, Kelsey Sullivan and Lauren Ford, to name a few. Kim Bogart’s team should again be a state contender in 2008.

8. Lee's Summit West (Lee's Summit, Missouri)
Final record: 37-2-1; Last ranking: 8
Pre-season ranking: 12

Is this the pre-season national No. 1 for 2008? The Titans graduate Gatorade Missouri POY Allie Huffman, but get all other key performers back. A strong club season without complacency could stamp this team as the one to beat next year.

9. Grandview (Aurora, Colorado)
Final record: 31-0; Last ranking: 9
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

The blue collar Wolves surprised the state with a perfect season thanks to a defense that coach Patricia Childress said was the best she’d ever had. Junior McCall Paynter, the first-team all state libero, will be back next year for her senior season, meaning Grandview’s defense should again be exceptional. Erica Denney should emerge as one of the state’s best front row players next season if she isn’t already in that group.

10. Naperville Central (Naperville, Illinois)
Final record: 38-4; Last ranking: 10
Pre-season ranking: 9

After winning state for the second time in three years, people are overlooking the Redhawks for 2008. My question is why? Sure, setter Megan McMahon and OH Rebecca Heath will graduate, but just about everyone else is back, including amazing OH Emily McGee and setter Kelsey Hoey, who got invaluable experience in big matches when McMahon was sidelined by appendicitis.

11. Shakopee (Minnesota)
Final record: 31-1; Last ranking: 11
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

Shakopee won the state 3A title in its first state tournament appearance, marking the first time since 1976 that a Minnesota team has made its initial showing a championship one. The Sabers graduate two tremendous seniors, but the rest of the team, including amazing sophomore Ashley Wittman, returns and should be favored to repeat.

12. Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, California)
Final record: 30-4; Last ranking: 16
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

Ten seniors graduate for the state champion Wolverines, but a nice core returns, led by three underclassmen who played key roles in the championship run, including state finals MVP Meg Norton.

13. Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas)
Final record: 42-2; Last ranking: 12
Pre-season ranking: 27

The highest ranked team not to win state, Miege had a dominant year until going Stag-nant in the state finals. Setter Kate VanDyke returns for her senior year.

14. Westlake (Austin, Texas)
Final record: 42-2; Last ranking: 13
Pre-season ranking: 30

The Chaps had exceptional balance in 2007. The team had more than 1500 kills, yet no one player had more than 330 kills. Elly Barrett, Sara Shaw and Abby Howden are the top returnees for 2008.

15. Mercy Academy (Louisville, Kentucky)
Final record: 38-4; Last ranking: 14
Pre-season ranking: 8

Taking over for his father and coaching his sister, Todd Garvey had a memorable year. The Jaguars didn’t win state – only one team can in Kentucky – but they would have been state champions in at least 40 other states. Eight great seniors graduate, so Mercy will have to lean heavily on setter Casey Garvey and MB Paige Wessel to contend in 2008.

16. Mead (Spokane, Washington)
Final record: 35-1; Last ranking: 15
Pre-season ranking: 20

Five large-class state titles in a row in Washington is mind-boggling. Coach Judy Kight couldn’t believe it when her Panthers matched Kentlake by winning three in a row. After winning a fifth ring in 2007, what will they do for an encore? Several impact seniors graduate, leaving Mead vulnerable, but the Panthers return 6-5 monster Alexis Olgard, the state’s best player since Christal Morrison. That’s a pretty good player to build around.

17. Plant (Tampa, Florida)
Final record: 31-1; Last ranking: 18
Pre-season ranking: 35

Plant’s only loss all year was to state 2A champion Evangelical Christian. The Panthers graduate their “big sister,” senior setter Kellie Catanach, but all others are back. A threepeat in Class 5A is likely.

18. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, California)
Final record: 35-4; Last ranking: 17
Pre-season ranking: 2

The Monarchs haven’t won a state title since 2004, but since that time they have lost only to teams that have won California state championships. That’s very impressive. Amanda Gil is one of five graduating Mitty players, and leaves as the all-time winningest Monarch (149-9), but with so much young talent on the varsity and in the pipeline, we predict a return to the state championship match for the Monarchs in 2008 AND a title.

19. Cypress Fairbanks (Houston, Texas)
Final record: 38-3; Last ranking: 18
Pre-season ranking: 76

Cy Fair had an amazing and wonderful year, reaching the state Final Four with a senior laden team. The Bobcats benefited from the transfer of talented senior setter Lacey Hayes and two of the best athletes in the state playing middle, Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike. Chiney will return next year.

20. Burris (Muncie, Indiana)
Final record: 37-3; Last ranking: 19
Pre-season ranking: 28

Burris won its 11th 2A title in a row in 2007, its 16th state crown in the past 19 years. With Allyson Morey, Mia Tabberson and Taylor Unroe among the Owls back for 2008, we should be writing about 12 in a row and 17 in 20 years at this time next season.

21. Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, California)
Final record: 26-4; Last ranking: 20
Pre-season ranking: 16

The Sailors had a great season in 2007. Could it have been even better? We’ll never know. Administrators denied Newport Harbor the right to compete in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions because of the Southern California wildfires, then the screwy CIF-Southern Section seedings and format denied them a spot in the state tournament. Does it help that PrepVolleyball.com acknowledges how talented this team, which had nine seniors, was?

22. Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, California)
Final record: 32-8; Last ranking: 21
Pre-season ranking: 17

The senior-dominated Sea Hawks set a school wins record in 2007. Four of Redondo’s eight losses came at the hands of national champion Mira Costa, including in the state semifinals, the second time in a row that Redondo has advanced that far. The Hawks won’t be nearly as good in 2008, though super frosh libero Lara Dykstra will return, probably in a setting role. “We have been the ‘5-11 under and thunder’ the past two years,” said head coach Tommy Chaffins. “Next year we may start five girls who are 6-0 or taller.”

23. Sacred Heart (Louisville, Kentucky)
Final record: 28-9; Last ranking: 24
Pre-season ranking: 18

Like brother Todd at Mercy Academy, Eric Garvey had a terrific first year as head coach. His Valkyries will graduate a ton of seniors, but rising juniors Emily Juhl and Kelsey Dunaway should give Sacred Heart a feared offense that wins at least as many matches next season.

24. Lakewood (California)
Final record: 29-7; Last ranking: 27
Pre-season ranking: 21

Two franchise seniors graduate from the Division I state champs, Jessica Thomas and Megan Johnson, but the young Lancers should contend for another state title in 2008 behind six key returnees, led by state finals MVP Jaz Orozco.

25. Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Final record: 24-5; Last ranking: 25
Pre-season ranking: 6

MND fielded a huge roster of 19 in 2007. Those Cougars came within one win of repeating as Ohio Division I champs. Feared MB Rachael Adams and three-year starting setter Rachel Rohlfs will be among a dozen saying bye to MND, but the cupboard isn’t bare. Amanda Wilken, Lauren Deutch, Marissa Otto, Lauren Huser, Kylee Novak and Kelly Morrissey should emerge as top talents next year.

The Next 757 (with random blurbs thrown in)

26. Lakeville North (Lakeville, Minnesota)
Final record: 30-2; Last ranking: 27
Pre-season ranking: 13

27. Iolani School (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Final record: 45-6-1; Last ranking: 26
Pre-season ranking: 26

Random note: All six Iolani starters were either first team or second team all league in the tough ILH. Two first teamers, MB Chelsea Hardin and setter Mali’e Yoon, are among four returnees that should make the Raiders the team to beat in 2008.

28. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, California)
Final record: 28-7; Last ranking: 28
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

Random note: After graduating eight and losing its coach from a CIF section championship team, who knew that 2008 would be almost as good? The Mavericks won the section again and might have won the state championship but for a five-set loss at home to Lakewood. Next year will not be a rebuilding year for LCC. With almost all impact players returning, the target will squarely be on the Mavericks to contend for state and national honors.

29. Eagle (Idaho)
Final record: 34-2; Last ranking: 29
Pre-season ranking: 15

30. Los Alamitos (California)
Final record: 30-6; Last ranking: 30
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

31. Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, North Carolina)
Final record: 33-2-1; Last ranking: 31
Pre-season ranking: 38

32. Person (Roxboro, North Carolina)
Final record: 26-1-2; Last ranking: 32
Pre-season ranking: 24

33. Washburn Rural (Topeka, Kansas)
Final record: 40-5; Last ranking: 33
Pre-season ranking: 40

34. Merion Mercy (Merion Station, Pennsylvania)
Final record: 42-0-1; Last ranking: 34
Pre-season ranking: 71

35. Reagan (San Antonio, Texas)
Final record: 32-5; Last ranking: 35
Pre-season ranking: 31

36. Benet Academy (Lisle, Illinois)
Final record: 35-4; Last ranking: 36
Pre-season ranking: 52

37. Naperville North (Naperville, Illinois)
Final record: 33-5; Last ranking: 37
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

38. St. Francis (Wheaton, Illinois)
Final record: 38-4; Last ranking: 38
Pre-season ranking: 14

39. Memorial (Edmond, Oklahoma)
Final record: 31-4; Last ranking: 39
Pre-season ranking: 49

40. Heritage Hall (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)
Final record: 34-1; Last ranking: 40
Pre-season ranking: 63

41. Chrysler (New Castle, Indiana)
Final record: 33-7; Last ranking: 41
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

42. Pius X (Lincoln, Nebraska)
Final record: 35-4; Last ranking: 42
Pre-season ranking: 41

Random note: The repeat Class B champs had seven players total more than 100 kills on the year: Mollie Lacy (452), Leigh Connot (286), Kellie Holtmeier (233), Hannah Zimmerman (195), Lauren Cook (165), Kayla Gaden (141) and Natalie Braun (130).

43. Papillion-La Vista (Papillion, Nebraska)
Final record: 37-6; Last ranking: 43
Pre-season ranking: 60

Random note: The Class A state champs could land three on the First Team Super State list next year, as this year’s Super Staters Gina Mancuso and Chelsey Feekin could be joined by freshman phenom Chelsea Albers.

44. Jenison (Michigan)
Final record: 65-6; Last ranking: 44
Pre-season ranking: 29

45. Mother McAuley (Chicago, Illinois)
Final record: 34-8; Last ranking: 46
Pre-season ranking: 54

46. Western Christian (Hull, Iowa)
Final record: 50-2; Last ranking: 47
Pre-season ranking: 56

Random note: Western Christian became the first Iowa school ever to win 50 matches this fall. Among the wins for the repeat 2A champs: a win over 4A champ Johnston and six wins over 3A champion Bishop Heelan.

47. Eaglecrest (Centennial, Colorado)
Final record: 28-3; Last ranking: 48
Pre-season ranking: 36

48. North Branch (Michigan)
Final record: 72-2; Last ranking: 49
Pre-season ranking: 99

49. Cor Jesu (St. Louis, Missouri)
Final record: 33-8; Last ranking: 50
Pre-season ranking: 58

Random note: Said coach Louise Wibbenmeyer: “Our motto/slogan for the year was ‘Bring It Back’....(on our warm up shirts)....the girls, from day one, had as their goal to bring back a State Championship again to Cor Jesu....(the last First finish was in '02 and this was also the last final four appearance).....we were just short of that goal....but we brought back a new mentality.....one where we expect to win, one where we expect to advance to the Championships.” The Chargers may have trouble duplicating their final four run again next year: six seniors graduate, including first team all state performers Amy Deelo and Rachal Yanker.

50. Kentwood (Covington, Washington)
Final record: 34-1; Last ranking: 51
Pre-season ranking: 43

51. East Kentwood (Kentwood, Michigan)
Final record: 60-4; Last ranking: 52
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

Random note: State champion Jenison handed East Kentwood three of its four losses. North Branch supplied the other one. There was a lot of winning of course. In fact, during the season, coach Roxanne Steenhuysen recorded win No. 960. The team also is very strong academically, achieving Academic All State honors for the 11th straight year with a team GPA of 3.62.

52. Central Catholic (Allentown, Pennsylvania)
Final record: 43-3; Last ranking: 53
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

53. Arlington (Texas)
Final record: 35-9; Last ranking: 54
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

54. Susquehannock (Glen Rock, Pennsylvania)
Final record: 45-1-5; Last ranking: 55
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

Despite losing to state 3A champion Allentown Central Catholic in the semis, what a great season for Susky, which finished with a game record of 108-15!

55. Joliet Catholic Academy (Joliet, Illinois)
Final record: 34-6; Last ranking: 56
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

56. Central (Muncie, Indiana)
Final record: 31-5; Last ranking: 57
Pre-season ranking: 95

Random note: It looked bad for the Cats when New Castle knocked them out of the state tourney. But New Castle continued its magical run all the way to the 4A state title. Muncie Central should be a state and national power again next year as standout libero Emily Fisher is the only starter graduating.

57. Bishop Watterson (Columbus, Ohio)
Final record: 25-2; Last ranking: 58
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

Random note: Key to this ranking wasn’t the losses to Mother of Mercy and Mt. Notre Dame. Even bad teams can lose to national powers. It was the way they competed. A win over GGCL stalwart McAuley helped a great deal as well.

58. Elkhart Memorial (Elkhart, Indiana)
Final record: 36-4; Last ranking: 59
Pre-season ranking: 57

59. Wheaton Warrenville South (Wheaton, Illinois)
Final record: 33-6; Last ranking: 60
Pre-season ranking: 79

60. Blue Valley West (Overland Park, Kansas)
Final record: 33-7; Last ranking: 61
Pre-season ranking: 86

61. Avon (Indiana)
Final record: 34-3; Last ranking: 62
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

62. Cathedral (Indianapolis, Indiana)
Final record: 33-3; Last ranking: 63
Pre-season ranking: 33

63. Marion Local (Maria Stein, Ohio)
Final record: 28-1; Last ranking: 64
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

Random note: State champions for the first time in school history, Marion Local earned it by playing the toughest Division IV schedule in the state. Of its 28 wins, 13 were against teams that advanced to Regionals or the state tournament. In addition to dominating its division, Marion also beat the Division III champion and runner up. Nine seniors, six of them starters, will make Marion Local less formidable next year, but the team, led by All Ohio freshman, Alyssa Winner, will still be tough, though shorter, as the JV and Freshman teams combined to go 41-0.

64. Huntsville (Alabama)
Final record: 53-9; Last ranking: 65
Pre-season ranking: 45

65. Buchholz (Gainesville Florida)
Final record: 27-5; Last ranking: 66
Pre-season ranking: 92

66. Xavier Prep (Phoenix, Arizona)
Final record: 33-5; Last ranking: 67
Pre-season ranking: 70

67. Lone Peak (Highland, Utah)
Final record: 29-2; Last ranking: 68
Pre-season ranking: 88

68. Downers Grove South (Downers Grove, Illinois)
Final record: 31-7; Last ranking: 69
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

69. Ursuline (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Final record: 19-8; Last ranking: 70
Pre-season ranking: 50

70. Central Catholic (Toledo, Ohio)
Final record: 25-4; Last ranking: 71
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

71. Eden (New York)
Final record: 51-2-1; Last ranking: 72
Pre-season ranking: 67

72. Johnston (Iowa)
Final record: 40-2; Last ranking: 73
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

73. Crook County (Prineville, Oregon)
Final record: 41-3; Last ranking: 74
Pre-season ranking: 100

74. Nevada Union (Grass Valley, California)
Final record: 45-5; Last ranking: 45
Pre-season ranking: 46

75. Martin (Arlington, Texas)
Final record: 38-8; Last ranking: 75
Pre-season ranking: 47

76. Grissom (Huntsville, Alabama)
Final record: 65-6; Last ranking: 76
Pre-season ranking: 90

Random note: At one point this season, the Tigers were riding a 46-match winning streak. Several of those wins came against eventual 6A champion Huntsville, a team Grissom defeated seven times against two losses. Those area rivals did not meet during the state tournament, however. Bob Jones came from two sets down to upend Grissom in the state semifinals. Huntsville claimed the crown with a win over Bob Jones one day later.

77. Plano West (Plano, Texas)
Final record: 34-9; Last ranking: 77
Pre-season ranking: 19

78. Lake Highlands (Dallas, Texas)
Final record: 39-6; Last ranking: 78
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

79. Santa Fe (Edmond, Oklahoma)
Final record: 32-3; Last ranking: 79
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

80. Marian (Omaha, Nebraska)
Final record: 35-6; Last ranking: 80
Pre-season ranking: 44

81. Bellmont (Decatur, Indiana)
Final record: 33-5; Last ranking: 81
Pre-season ranking: 80

82. Northview (Duluth, Georgia)
Final record: 41-7; Last ranking: 82
Pre-season ranking: 34

83. Watertown (Wisconsin)
Final record: 40-7; Last ranking: 83
Pre-season ranking: 66

Random note: Watertown stormed to the Division I title in 2007. The good news is the Indians started four sophomores, OH Erienne Lauersdorf, OH Leanna Lillge, OH Kaley Jacobson and setter Erica Hozeska. The bad news is Watertown loses a lot of offense with the graduation of Debbie Stadick and Lindsay Schwartz, and the leadership with Ellyn Will. “We will be a different team that will need to rely a little more on great defense and ball control,” said coach Travis Hull. “I believe that our sophomores all took some big steps this year and are excited about the opportunity of carrying the team.”

84. Sycamore (Illinois)
Final record: 39-3; Last ranking: 84
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

85. Timber Creek (Orlando, Florida)
Final record: 28-3; Last ranking: 85
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

86. Morley-Stanwood (Morley, Michigan)
Final record: 51-4-2; Last ranking: 86
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

87. Flintridge Sacred Heart (La Canada-Flintridge, California)
Final record: 25-6; Last ranking: 88
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

Random note: If the CIF-Southern Section had a more rational approach to the state tournament, we might be talking about Sacred Heart as the state Division IV champs rather than Santa Fe Christian. But at least the Tologs would have had the chance to fight it out on the floor. As it was, Division IV FSH was eliminated from state contention by Division III state champion Harvard-Westlake with a four-set loss in the CIF-SS Div. I-A playoffs. The Tologs feel cheated and have that right. They may never have as good a team again, with setter Sam Orlandini and her 4,263 career assists one of two key graduating talents along with OH Katie Condon.

88. Santa Barbara (California)
Final record: 21-6; Last ranking: 87
Pre-season ranking: 69

89. Northwest (Grand Island, Nebraska)
Final record: 32-4; Last ranking: 89
Pre-season ranking: Not ranked

90. Loudoun County (Leesburg, Virginia)
Final record: 28-0; Last ranking: 90
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

91. Magnolia (Texas)
Final record: 34-8; Last ranking: 91
Pre-season ranking: 10

92. Reservoir (Fulton, Maryland)
Final record: 26-1; Last ranking: 92
Pre-season ranking: Bubble

93. Frank Cox (Virginia Beach, Virginia)
Final record: 27-1; Last ranking: 93
Pre-season ranking: 68

94. Magnificat (Rocky River, Ohio)
Final record: 23-5; Last ranking: 94
Pre-season ranking: 77

Random note: Magnificat reached the state Final Four for the first time since 1999 by rallying from down 18-4 in Game 1 of its regional final with Amherst Steele to win in five games. The MVP of that match for the Blue Streaks, who lost to Mt. Notre Dame in the Division I semifinals, was sophomore MB Michele Chakirelis, who had 15 kills and five blocks.

95. Coppell (Texas)
Final record: 38-5; Last ranking: 95
Pre-season ranking: 39

Random note: Breast cancer awareness and fund raising matches were the rage in high school volleyball this season. The one organized by Coppell senior Laurie McNamara, however, might have been the biggest. “Dig for the Cure” raised more than $13,000 for Komen Dallas County.

96. Hayden Catholic (Topeka, Kansas)

102. Deep Run (Richmond, Virginia)
Final record: 24-5

Random note: The Wildcats have lost to Frank Cox in the season-opening Ukrops Showcase the past three years. But they have ousted Cox from the playoffs the past three years. Wins in the past two years have spurred Deep Run to the Virginia 4A title.

103. John Glenn (Elwood, New York)
Final record: 44-2-5

Random note: The Class B champs loved setting its middles: junior Jackie McKenna and senior Jackie Ammirato finished the season with 878 kills between them.

104. St. Francis (Mountain View, California)
Final record: 33-7

105. St. Paul’s (Brooklandville, Maryland)
Final record: 22-1

Random note: St. Paul’s suffered only one loss on the year, to Archbishop Spaldding, but swept them the final two times they played. Coach Kelli Wilkinson said this is the best team in school history. Gatorade Maryland POY Bailey Webster returns next season, but four key starters graduate.

106. Darien (Connecticut)
Final record: 25-0

107. Venice (Florida)
Final record: 27-4

Three years later, she capped her career by notching 47 assists in the 4A finals as Mountain View won a second title in four years. Roark was named tourney MVP by one paper. Libero Katherine Spahr, who had 32 digs in the win over Cheyenne Mountain, was MVP in another.

Final record: 31-6

121. Carmel (Indiana)
Final record: 29-9

122. Buchanan (Clovis, California)
Final record: 31-8

Random note: The Bears return 9 of 12 players for next year, but will struggle to replace star seniors Brianna Clark and Baylee Platt. Chances are they will because tradition doesn’t graduate. Buchanan has won its conference 10 out of the last 11 years, the Valley section seven of the past 11 years and this fall was one win away from representing Southern California in the state Division I championship.

123. Newton (Kansas)
Final record: 42-3

124. Barnstable (Hyannis, Massachusetts)
Final record: 23-2

Random note: The Red Raiders did not go undefeated again this year, but coach Tom Turco would argue that this Barnstable team was his most successful. The Red Raiders set the state record for consecutive wins with 110 and challenged itself against top out-of-state competition from California and New York, going 2-1 in those matches. Finally, Barnstable dominated the state tournament to win Division I for the fifth straight time and 11th in 15 years.

Final record: 25-2

203. St. Joseph's (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)
Final record: 37-8

Random note: In a state where most teams didn’t have six strong players to put on the court, the Redstickers had 12 or more players who were capable of starting. “From match to match, we have changed our lineup to compete against our opponent’s strength,” said first-year coach Sivi Miller. Consider junior libero Kaitlin Hatcher. At the beginning of the season, she was one of many 5-9 or so outside hitters on the team fighting for court time. By the end, she was the state tournament MVP, leading St. Joseph’s from the back row to the state Division I title and emerging as one of the premier libero prospects in the south.

217. Penn (Mishawaka, Indiana)
Final record: 30-5

Random note: Penn senior Emily Ehlers  was voted Northern Indiana Conference co-MVP with Alex Hunt of South Bend St. Joseph’s. Here’s what South Bend Tribune reporter Scott Davidson wrote about them in his blog: "One final thought. The last time I wrote I mentioned the leading candidates for MVP honors this year in the Northern Indiana Conference. I have to say that the two leading candidates, Emily Ehlers of Penn and Alex Hunt of St. Joseph 's, are even better people than they are players. Both Ehlers and Hunt, who are good friends and who both will play in the Big 10, epitomize class. They are humble, soft-spoken and have just been a pleasure to cover and deal with this year. It's student-athletes like Ehlers and Hunt, two of the many outstanding young people that I get to deal with each year, that make this such an enjoyable profession."

218. Pope (Marietta, Georgia)
Final record: 41-4

219. Wesleyan (Norcross, Georgia)

Final record: 23-8

222. West Linn (Oregon)
Final record: 24-4

223. Saint Charles East (Saint Charles, Illinois)
Final record: 29-13

Random note: In pre-season, coach Jennie Kull opined that this was not going to be her team’s year. She was wrong, of course, as Saint Charles East advanced to the state Final Four. “The kids made this an amazing season,” she said. “They exceeded all expectations.  A quote from Albert Schweitzer defines this season:  ‘Success is not the key to happiness.  Happiness is the key to success.  If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.’  This team loved to be together and didn’t want the season to end.  I learned a great deal from these kids.  It really isn’t always the best talented team that wins, but the team that wants it the most!”

224. Northwest Christian (Glendale, Arizona)
Final record: 38-6

225. Columbine (Littleton, Colorado)
Final record: 24-7

226. Notre Dame (Covington, Kentucky)

Final record: 30-6

237. St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida)
Final record: 27-5

238. Jensen Beach (Florida)
Final record: 26-5

Random note: Some schools have been playing volleyball for several decades without coming close to winning a state title. Jensen Beach turned the trick in only four years and took out two state powerhouses in the process, 18 time state champ Cardinal Gibbons and two-time defending 4A finalist Bishop Kenny. Coach Mike Sawtelle took mostly freshmen and sophomores when the program started and look what he’s done. The team’s obviously a fast learner, so it’s no surprise that the team GPA crests 3.7!

271. Neuqua Valley (Naperville, Illinois)
Final record: 22-10

Random note: The Naperville school, usually in the shadow of Naperville Central and Naperville North, made its own headlines in 2007. The best record in school history included wins over four powerhouse teams and a first-ever varsity tourney championship at the Waubonsie Valley Warrior Blast. Four starters are back for coach Kelly Simon next year, but Neuqua Valley will have to find a replacement for All Stater Paige Stevens, who led the team in kills and was second in assists and blocks.

Final record: 33-7

Random note: Marquette won state, again, with four sophomores and one freshman in the starting lineup. Think they’ll be favored to win their fifth in a row next year? Besides talent, key to the team’s success was jump serving: Marquette amassed more than 650 aces.

285. Downers Grove North (Downers Grove, Illinois)
Final record: 27-9

286. Parkway West (Ballwin, Missouri)
Final record: 24-9

287. Bowling Green (Ohio)
Final record: 24-2

288. South Christian (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
Final record: 43-17-1

289. Archbishop O’Hara (Kansas City, Missouri)
Final record: 25-12-1

Random note: Coach Lori Hanaway made a triumphant return to O’Hara after a one-year, championship-winning stint at St. Teresa’s. The Celtics won the state Class 3 title for the fourth time in six years and did so with a very young team, led by two strong freshmen, 6-1 Tori Hurtt, who was first team all state; and 5-9 Michala Boehm. O’Hara will have two invaluable seniors to replace if it is to contend again next year, setter Erin Stephenson and OH Dani Foreman.

298. Science Hill (Johnson City, Tennessee)
Final record: 47-6

299. Normal Community (Normal, Illinois)
Final record: 30-8

Random note: All area libero Rachel Feldman graduates. That’s a tough loss, as she was the team’s leader. So, too, does RS Paige Lay, a second-team all-area pick. But five key contributors return, including OH Jenny Menendez, the team MVP.

337. Clear Creek (League City, Texas)
Final record: 27-13

Random note: Watch out for Clear Creek in 2008. The Wildcats return top all-around player Megan Pendergast, stunning libero Haley Jacob and superb setter Becky Bekelja from a team that reached the Final Four at Regional for the fifth time in seven years, a claim no other Houston-area squad can make.

Sophomore Mary Cushman, who set school records for season kills and kills in a match (36), is one of seven players in West Irondequoit’s top eight who will return in 2008. Five of the returnees received All-League recognition.

357. Niceville (Florida)
Final record: 26-4

Random note: Niceville set school records in aces, kills, serve percentage and assists in 2007. The Eagles return almost everyone but they will feel the loss of senior setter Jennica Hagberg. Bound for Stetson, Hagberg led the area with 841 assists and 79 aces. Those will be big shoes (or should I say, “a big hat”) to fill.

358. San Clemente (California)
Final record: 19-5

359. Homestead (Cupertino, California)
Final record: 25-14

Random note: The state Division I semifinalists will graduate four but return their top two kill getter and setter Melissa Cheng.  One of the seniors, OH Lauren Hoopes, ran a two-person serve-receive most of the season with junior star Katherine Fischer. “When they were both in and running this serve receive the team had a record of 24-6,” said coach Matt Hoffman.  “When we ran a 3 person (beginning of season) or both were not in (Fischer was out for 2 weeks) the team had a record of 5-5.  I think that shows how both were relied on heavily to get our offense going each time and did an excellent job the entire season.”

360. South Lyon (Michigan)
Final record: 31-10-3

361. Sugar-Salem (Sugar City, Idaho)
Final record: 35-6

Random note: The state 3A champs didn’t lose to a 3A foe all year. In fact, the Diggers’ six losses were spread out among just three teams: one loss to 5A champ Eagle, three to 5A runner-up Idaho Falls (a team Sugar-Salem also twice defeated) and two to 4A champ Bonneville.

368. Viewmont (Bountiful, Utah)
Final record: 27-6

Random note: The Vikings had a terrific and unexpected year that included a third place finish in the state 5A tournament. Fiona Jones,  Ada Robinson, Britny Mortenson, Llynsi Barnes, Amy Earnshaw, Chloe Muse, Natalie Bonner and Sarah Page were all part of Viewmont’s resurgence.

392a. Notre Dame (Middleburg, Virginia)
Final record: 26-3

Random note: The Virginia Independent Schools Division II champions behind tourney MVP Mary McCarthy, the Dragons almost didn’t make it to the finals after 6-3 sophomore Molly Baldwin showed up without shoes for the semifinals. Her mom went out frantically looking for shoes at 9:30 a.m. in Williamsburg and returned just before the match with “plastic-looking” size 11 shoes. After the match, as Notre Dame was celebrating victory, coach Shelly Franco said, "We did it!  We are going to the championship!" Baldwin answered, "And coach, I did it with K-Mart shoes!"  “She had 11 kills that match, and I think the last play of the match was on her kill... .in K-mart shoes,” Franco said. Notre Dame went on to beat 27-3 Walsingham Academy in the state finals. The Dragons had lost in the finals to Walsingham the past two years.

With Krista Vansant back to serve, the freshman delivered back to back aces to give the Wildcats the title. While the entire team is young and talented, Vansant was a standout, breaking the school record for kills in a season and hitting percentage, while finishing among the team leaders in blocks, digs and aces.

Nicole Favreau again was a standout for Rosary, averaging 20 kills and 6 blocks per match.

522. Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch, Colorado)
Final record: 20-9

This year’s team state championship team had two seniors, Bethany Beck and Mary Beth Allen, and no juniors. The sophomore class of Broekhuis, Hannah Walker, Brianne Vande Griend and Heather Poll plus 2 freshmen, Ashley Peak and Katie Maguire, have continued the winning tradition at CSCS. This sophomore class mirrors the class of 2007 in many ways. They both played together through middle school and were a dominant team in the state. Moreover, this year, Mike Broekhuis, father of Morgan, took over the program.
